Arts at AOA

“The true purpose of the arts education is not necessarily to create more professional dancers or artists. It’s to create more complete human beings who are critical thinkers, who have curious minds, who can lead productive lives." -Kelly Pollock

At Andrews Osborne Academy, the Arts Department strives to give all students the best possible arts experiences, whether the student is trying the arts for the first time or plans to pursue the arts as a career. We personalize a diverse variety of opportunities for our students at all levels.

In Lower School, students explore visual art each week and general music twice a week. Starting in second and third grade students are introduced to the Ukulele. In fourth and fifth grade students may choose to learn an instrument in a band elective. Students have the opportunity to perform in all grades in plays, skits, and/or dancing such as Shakespeare in fourth grade and the Passports Program in first grade. We also have various dance elective opportunities throughout the school year, including student performances.

Our Middle School program includes an explorer rotation where students experience visual and performing arts for a few weeks; additionally, students put together a middle school musical production in which students can participate in the creation of the sets, costumes, props, marketing, and performing. Moreover, there are arts electives where students can participate in dance, choir, visual art, and band throughout the year, including concerts in the winter and spring.

In Upper School, students have a wide range of courses that they can explore. Our visual arts offers courses such as: Intro to Visual Art, Painting, Drawing, Ceramics, Textiles, Sculpture, Portfolio, and AP Studio Art. Students can explore a variety of these media and choose to deepen their understanding by taking a secondary or tertiary level course in a particular media. We also offer digital design courses including: Tech & Design, Digital Photography, Game Art, and Advanced Integrated Media. In the performing arts, students can take choir, piano, acting, or technical theater. In addition to arts electives we offer extracurricular opportunities like National Art Honors Society, National Honors Society for Dance Arts, and International Thespian Society. Each year, AOA holds an Upper School play and musical. Students who participate in these extracurricular activities can earn an Arts Letter by meeting specific requirements.
